Householder – Propagating Native Species Workshop
The Lord Howe Island Board was pleased to host the second workshop in its horticulture series, focusing on native plant propagation.
The first workshop, led by Mark Dunphy from Firewheel Rainforest Nursery, offered valuable insights and practical guidance on propagation techniques. This included managing cuttings, understanding the difference between well behaved and invasive exotics and propagating native plants from seed.
The second workshop was hosted by Jack Shick at his property. Jack generously shared his knowledge and experience, covering topics such as composting, revegetation and producing natural fertilisers at home. Participants also had the opportunity to pot up and plant native trees.
The school also hosted a session lead by Georgie (and Mark) from the Big Scrub Rainforest Conservancy, where students explored the school gardens, identifying the different trees and plants growing on the grounds. Students showed great curiosity and enthusiasm as they explored, building their knowledge of local species and field observation.
The Board would like to sincerely thank Mark, Georgie and Jack for sharing their expertise, and to all who participated in the workshops.
A special thank you to Nelly and the Nursery for their support with native plants and lucky door prizes.
This project is funded by the Australian Government Natural Heritage Trust and delivered alongside Local Land Services, a member of the Commonwealth Regional Delivery Partners panel.
