The Lord Howe Island Act 1953 (the Act) provides for the care, control and management of Lord Howe Island to protect its unique values and the interests of its residents.
The Lord Howe Island Local Environmental Plan (LEP) is made under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 and controls planning and development on the Island. The conservation values of Lord Howe Island are also protected by other state and federal legislation, and statutory planning documents.
The Board oversees the development assessment and planning process to ensure the quality of the natural and built environment is maintained.
