Meeting frequency and attendance
The Board meets a minimum of four times a year. The Board will meet in Open Session on the following dates (dates may be subject to change) at the Lord Howe Island Community Hall:
- 26 February 2025
- 5 June 2025
- 27 August 2025
- 26 November 2025
Community members are invited to attend the open session of the Board meeting. All Board matters are discussed and determined in open session except for the following:
- staff and industrial matters
- commercial matters
- personal affairs of private individuals
- possible or pending litigation
Code of meeting practice
The Board has adopted a Code of Meeting Practice prescribing standards and procedures for Board meetings.
The Board recognises that in certain circumstances it may be impractical or impossible to consider all appropriate matters at open Board meetings. Examples of such matters may include:
- Issues of an urgent and pressing nature where no formal meeting can be arranged within the timeframe required.
- Issues of a minor nature which, in the interests of customer service and/or administrative expediency, should not be delayed pending discussion at a formal meeting.
The Board has established procedures for dealing with such matters and will review these procedures to ensure that they are adequate and appropriate. Where it is necessary to determine issues out of session, the Board will ensure that the public is appropriately informed of decisions reached.

Lord Howe Island Board Committee
In August 2025, the Board established the Lord Howe Island Board Committee. This Committee is made up of the four elected Board members and was created to:
- Strengthen Board governance
- Improve efficiency in decision-making
- Provide early advice on policy and strategic matters
- Filter administrative matters for Board consideration
The Committee is chaired by the Deputy Chair (if they are an elected member) and is supported by the CEO and LHIB Administration. It meets monthly or as required. These meetings replace the previous informal fortnightly CEO–elected members meetings.
The Committee currently makes recommendations only. Final decisions remain with the full Board. In future, the Board may delegate certain decisions to the Committee under a revised policy and delegations framework.
What this means for the community
The Committee allows your elected members to be more directly involved in shaping local decisions. Community matters will now be considered through this formal process, rather than informal meetings.
If you have any questions about the Committee, please feel free to speak to one of your elected Board members.
Terms of Reference
The Committee operates under a Terms of Reference, which outlines its objectives, responsibilities and governance arrangements.
