Community Environment Advisory Committee (CEAC)

The Community Environment Advisory Committee (CEAC) provides an important platform for community input into environmental management and conservation planning on Lord Howe Island.

While the CEAC does not have formal decision-making authority, it serves as an important advisory body to the Lord Howe Island Board, ensuring that local voices and values are reflected in key environmental decisions.

What the CEAC Does

The CEAC will offer guidance on a range of environmental issues, including:

  • Biosecurity and invasive species
  • Land and weed management
  • Threatened species recovery
  • Broader environmental and sustainability concerns

In particular, the CEAC will play a central role in advising on two major strategic plans currently under review:

Permanent Park Preserve Plan of Management (PPP PoM)

The PPP PoM sets the framework for managing the Permanent Park Preserve, which covers about 70% of Lord Howe Island. It protects the Island’s World Heritage values, natural landscapes, and guides sustainable use.

The last full review was in 2010. While community feedback was collected in 2018, it was not formally published. We acknowledge delays in the update process and thank the community for its ongoing patience.

A preliminary draft of the revised PPP PoM now includes:

  • Permitted activities within the Preserve
  • Priorities for protecting the values of the Preserve
  • Guidance on managing recreation, tourism, and research
  • Community and advisory group feedback
  • Consideration of emerging conservation challenges
  • Alignment with broader environmental management strategies

Biodiversity Management Plan (BMP)

The BMP is the island-wide plan for conserving biodiversity across land, freshwater, and marine environments. It guides how native species and ecosystems are conserved and restored, focusing on key threats such as invasive species, climate change, and habitat loss.

The current BMP was developed in 2007. Past programs like the Rodent Eradication and Weed Eradication Projects have been guided by the BMP, helping protect over 330 species. The updated BMP will reflect:

The updated BMP will:

  • Identify priority conservation actions across the island
  • Guide program delivery and resource allocation
  • Support threatened species recovery and ecological restoration
  • Respond to climate change and invasive species threats
  • Include clear goals, timelines, budgets, and success measures

The review of both the PPP PoM and the BMP is being undertaken concurrently, informed by input from the community, subject matter experts, and relevant agencies. Together, these plans will provide a strategic framework for conservation on Lord Howe Island over the coming decade.

Community Involvement

The CEAC will ensure community values shape future conservation efforts. Opportunities for broader community input will be available through:

  • Public exhibition of the PPP PoM
  • Community workshops as part of the BMP review
