Spring myrtle rust property inspections

As part of seasonal monitoring to keep LHI myrtle rust-free, searches will be conducted on private leases and existing transects in the PPP from 3-6 October.

Myrtle rust is a highly infectious exotic fungus that is most active in warmer weather. The fungus attacks young, actively growing leaves, making spring an important time to undertake monitoring.

The last active myrtle rust spores were seen on 17 March 2023. After two months of no detections, the last searches for myrtle rust were completed on 16 May. There is always a risk that the pathogen will find its way back to LHI, so continued vigilance and early detection are crucial.

All leaseholders that have previously requested 24-hour notice will be contacted to organise the inspection.

If you require 24-hour notice prior to LHIB staff accessing your lease, please notify us by Thursday, 28 September on 02 6563 2066 or [email protected]

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation while we safeguard our Island from myrtle rust.
