Jetty maintenance update

Scheduled construction works have been completed on the jetty.
66 piles were unwrapped, treated, and rewrapped. Steel thickness tests were conducted, and all were found to be in extremely good condition.

Jetty repairs

Timber decking and kerbs that were replaced as scheduled and bollards were recoated with a protective paint.

As the replacement of the fenders began, it became evident that a greater portion of the fendering system, including the connecting timbers, would require deconstruction beyond the initial assessment.

Given the current condition of the fender timbers and piles, there was a significant risk that reconstruction would not be possible after the installation of the new fenders. Consequently, the replacement works for the fenders, fender rubbing strips, and sheer chains were put on hold.

In addition, while replacing the decking, dry rot was discovered in some of the timber girders (located underneath the decking) potentially affecting the load capacity of the jetty. Load concerns were only with regards to the crane and any heavy loads it would need to carry.

Engineers from Worley Consulting have provided a condition assessment of the timber girders to ensure that all future crane activities performed on the jetty are done in a safe manner.

Engineers have identified areas of concern, which have been marked out for crane operators to avoid. Safe crane operations can continue to be conducted, but with care to avoid the marked-out areas. Ship operations will not be affected by this.

This is a temporary measure and will remain in place until a comprehensive condition report for the jetty timber girders is provided by Worley Consulting.

A replacement schedule for the affected sections can be planned, ensuring unprohibited use of the entire jetty moving forward.

Worley Consulting will also provide a concept design for an upgraded and modernised fendering system to ensure the jetty is fit-for-purpose and future-proofed.

Next steps and further maintenance repairs will be advised by householder in the coming weeks.
