Foreshore Cleanup Update

The Lord Howe Island Board has completed the removal and responsible disposal of most rubbish items from the lagoon foreshore. The next phase of the cleanup has now commenced, with unclaimed items that appear derelict being removed and disposed of.

This will be followed by the removal of all other unclaimed tagged items for storage at a secure LHIB facility. Owners can reclaim their items without charge until Monday 30 September 2025, noting that some residents and seasonal staff may not yet have returned to the Island. From 1 to 31 October, items may still be collected, but a release fee will apply. Items that remain unclaimed after Wednesday 30 October will be disposed of or sold in accordance with the Public Spaces (Unattended Property) Act 2021.

The Board will make reasonable efforts to identify owners of unclaimed items before disposal or sale and encourages community members to notify returning residents and staff about the cleanup and the need to contact the LHIB to reclaim their belongings.

The final stage of the project will be a survey and cleanup of the boat ramp area. As a reminder, small private watercraft and trailers (under 6 metres) must not be stored in this area for longer than 48 hours. Owners of small watercraft stored in the area will be directed to remove their items under the Lord Howe Island Regulation 2014 part 10 cl. 93. Vessels over 6 metres may be stored temporarily for repairs or maintenance, subject to LHIB approval, relevant fees and conditions.

The Board thanks the community for its ongoing cooperation.
