Applications open for Senior Electrical Officer

The Lord Howe Island Board is seeking a Senior Electrical Officer to maintain, operate and regulate the island’s hybrid powerhouse plant and equipment in accordance with Lord Howe Island Board and government regulations. 

This role is crucial for providing uninterrupted power supply to residents and facilities, managing renewable energy systems, and responding to electrical emergencies, within the context of limited resources and unique geographical challenges.

About you

To be successful in the role, you will need significant experience in the operation, repair, and maintenance of renewable energy systems and diesel generator sets.

 A sound understanding of high and low voltage operating requirements is essential, along with knowledge of NSW Supply Authority practices, Standards Australia Electrical Supply Industry regulations, and current electrical safety procedures.

Experience in regional supply authority environments is required, along with familiarity in operating both high and low voltage systems and using computerised maintenance and data logging tools. You should have broad experience in supply industry management and generation issues, with in-depth knowledge of hybrid power systems, diesel generation, and renewable energy technologies.

You will oversee inspections, ensure regulatory compliance, manage electrical infrastructure projects and budgets, and maintain accurate records. Familiarity with safety standards, electrical service rules, and safety management systems is also essential.

The role demands strong troubleshooting skills, the ability to maintain complex electrical systems, deliver infrastructure upgrades within time and budget, and respond effectively to power disruptions, particularly for critical services. It requires a high level of autonomy and sound decision-making to maintain a safe, reliable, and efficient electrical supply.

  • Electrical Trades Certificate (Supervisors Certificate) 
  • UEPOPS022 Coordinate and direct switching program
  • UEPOPS036 Develop HV switching programs
  • UEPOPS116 Operate local HV switchgear
  • UEPOPS124 Perform switching to a switching program
  • UETDRSB001 Perform substation switching operations to a given schedule
  • Class C Driver’s license

Note: The role requires being on call on a rostered basis to promptly address maintenance and repair needs, ensuring swift resolution of issues to maintain continuous power supply.
