2023/24 NSW budget

Hi everyone,

I am writing with great news for Lord Howe Island in the 2023/24 NSW budget.

The budget has included significant funding for:

  • Replacement of the waste management facility on Lord Howe Island.
  • Funding to secure a long-term marine freight service for the Island.

As many of you will know, the MV Island Trader is nearing the end of its life. The funding announced in this year’s budget means we can progress plans for a replacement vessel, and modernised wharf facilities, to ensure the community has a reliable marine freight service tailored to the needs of Lord Howe.

As all Islanders will be acutely aware, most essential supplies including food and fuel must be transported here by sea. This new funding therefore addresses a critical risk for the community. A feature of the new arrangements will be enhanced biosecurity measures to protect the island and its economy and to minimise the risk of disruption to freight services.

Feedback from the community will be sought on plans for the replacement waste management facility and the design of wharf facilities.

These two initiatives represent a huge win for the Island.

The funding would not have been possible without the strong support of our Minister, the Hon Penny Sharpe. I would like to also recognise the Directors of the Lord Howe Island Board, especially the Island-based Directors who ensure a sharp ongoing focus on the critical needs of the island community.

The Board administration, led by the Chief Executive (Suzie Christensen), and the team in the Environment and Heritage Group have worked tirelessly and with a high level of professionalism to secure this outcome.

While we have many challenges still to address, it is important to reflect on the progress that has been made in recent times. For example:

  • In relation to the Board’s financial position, this year’s total budget is around $30 million. While much of this is tied to specific projects, it is a significant increase in overall funding and our core budget position has stabilised.
  • The effective control of rodents, and the action to eradicate Myrtle Rust, mean that Lord Howe is a shining example globally for the control of invasive species and the restoration of threatened species such as the Lord Howe Woodhen.
  • There are significant and productive reforms being delivered in the administration, led by the Chief Executive, Suzie Christensen.

I hope you will join me and other Directors in celebrating this budget outcome. Rest assured we will remain focused on the priority needs of the Island community, consistent with our legislative charter, and will keep you updated as these projects enter the planning phase.
