Applications open for LHIB Biosecurity Officer

Do you want to make a difference for LHI? LHIB is accepting applications for a full-time Biosecurity Officer.

About you

You will be physically fit, self-motivated, resourceful and keen to join an experienced team committed to protecting the values of a World Heritage listed Island.

As a Biosecurity Officer, you will conduct regulatory biosecurity activities within the framework of relevant legislation and state and local policies, procedures and operational plans. You will provide operational frontline field service delivery to protect the environment and economy of Lord Howe Island from the introduction and establishment of exotic / invasive species and pathogens.

The position will assist in the surveillance and monitoring of potential invasion pathways, proactive identification of biosecurity threats, and rapid response to biosecurity breaches. Along with your colleagues, you will support new and emerging biosecurity issues, incidents and emergency responses.

You will work with the Board’s amazing detection dogs and build proficiency in dog handling.

The role carries responsibility, and you will be reliable, trustworthy and confident engaging with community, visitors and stakeholders. While you will enjoy being in the field, you will also be comfortable in applying technology and assist with administration and reporting.

You will work flexibly to a roster and commit to maintaining skills through training and occasional travel.

Essential requirements

Ideally, you’ll have some or all of the following now, however if not you’ll need to have the ability and willingness to obtain these as part of your employment in the role:

  • Appropriate qualifications and knowledge of pesticide application and guidelines.
  •  Certificate IV in Government Investigations, or ability to successfully complete same.
  • Current Class C NSW drivers licence.
  • Capacity to acquire First Aid Certificate, firearms licence and Aviation Security Identity Card (ASIC) (and the ASIC associated security checks).
