New foot mats enhance frontline biosecurity defence at the airport

08 Dec 2023

A new disinfectant foot mat has been installed at the airport to help reduce incoming biosecurity threats like myrtle rust and phytophthora.

The mat replaces foot scrub bays that were temporarily set-up at the airport during the myrtle rust incursion earlier this year. This upgrade is in line with best-practice systems from Sydney Airport.

The mat system simplifies the cleaning process and enhances safety, requiring only that travellers walk over it to make contact with their shoe soles.

Establishing a consistent process of disinfecting the bottom of shoes at the Island’s major entry point allows us to stop plant pathogens in their tracks more effectively.

How the mat works

The mat is regularly monitored and serviced by LHIB Biosecurity Officers, at least once a day during the busy summer months.

The system is made up of two mats: a wet (not dripping) and dry. The wet mat contains Quatsan, a multi-purpose sanitiser that can also be found at the foot dip stations at track heads. The intentionally dry mat helps limit slipping hazards.

Protecting paradise beyond the airport

Visitors and community members are encouraged to use a 70% ethanol and water sanitiser solution to clean the tops of shoes, clothing, bags and gear before arriving and while on the Island.

Read more about best practice hygiene protocols before you head out to track heads and when moving between different locations.

Thank you for your support with limiting the impact of biosecurity risks on LHI.
