Applications open for Plant Officer (Mechanic)

LHIB are seeking applications for a full-time permanent Plant Officer, based locally, to contribute towards the maintenance of plant and equipment, and provision of services to the community and visitors of Lord Howe Island.

About the role
This role is to repair, service and maintain vehicles, plant, and equipment, including the coordination of components and spare parts within a remote environment, to optimise the operational effectiveness and safety and road worthiness of the mechanical fleet and plant on Lord Howe Island.

This role is tasked with undertaking roadworthy inspections of all vehicles on the Island as a Roads and Maritime Service licensed service agent. The role also maintains and repairs generating sets in the Board’s Powerhouse, as required, to ensure its efficient operation.

The position enjoys attractive working conditions under the Crown Employees (Lord Howe Island Board Salaries and Conditions) Award, including relocation assistance and subsidised rental housing, if required.

About you
We need a certified professional with strong technical skills and the ability to work independently in a remote area.

You must excel in diagnosing and fixing vehicle issues, prioritise safety, and stay updated on industry advancements.

You should be a self-motivated team player with good communication, organisation, and a strong work ethic.

Being customer-centric and physically fit is important, and a valid MR driver's license is essential.

Essential requirements 

  • Trade qualifications and experience as a Mechanic in Mobile Plant Technology (AUR31216), or equivalent qualifications from the Motor Vehicle Repair Industry Council (MVRIC)
  • Class MR Driver's licence
  • Safework High Risk licence for forklift and crane
  • Competent in heavy plant operation
