Householder – Middle Beach stairs works: upcoming track and stairs closures

Works to replace the Middle Beach stairs are underway. This notice sets out the walking track and stairs closures that will apply from late July through August.

The Lord Howe Island Board understands these walking tracks are well used, and that this is a longer closure than initially communicated.

Walking tracks: closed from 24 July
To move materials safely, the overhead cable system will be reconstructed from Friday 24 July. While it is in place the following walking tracks are closed:

  • Clear Place
  • Valley of the Shadows
  • Middle Beach Walking Track

These tracks are expected to reopen by 22 August but may reopen earlier.

Middle Beach stairs: staged closures

  • South stairs: closed from 5am on Friday 24 July
  • North stairs: closed from 5am Monday 17 August

Reopening dates to be confirmed.

Access to Middle Beach
While the south stairs are closed, Middle Beach will remain accessible via the north stairs. This route is suitable for most visitors; however, the track includes short, steep sections and rough surfaces, so some bushwalking experience is recommended.

Access via the north stairs is also dependent on the tide. Visitors should check tide times and plan their visit accordingly.

Middle Beach will not be accessible from either entrance from Monday 17 August to Saturday 22 August, while the north stairs are closed for replacement.

The Board appreciates the community's patience while these works are completed safely.
