Householder – Community feedback – Emergency radio devices

The Lord Howe Island Board (LHIB), in partnership with the Local Emergency Management Committee (LEMC), is working to improve emergency communication in remote areas of the island.

Under the Board’s current radio licence, fixed emergency radio devices can be installed to allow immediate two-way communication with LHI Police and other emergency services in case of injury, illness or other emergencies.

Following consultation with LHI Police, emergency agencies and the Community Environment Advisory Committee (CEAC), the Board plans to install emergency radios at:

  • Ned’s Beach Shed (next to defibrillator)
  • North Bay Shed (next to defibrillator)
  • Jetty Shed (next to fire extinguisher)

These devices will be mounted to the shed wall with a solar panel on the roof. At Ned's Beach and North Bay shed, the devices will be installed next to the defibrillators for better visibility and emergency access.

Proposed additional locations – your input is invited

LHIB is now seeking community feedback on four more remote sites where emergency radio devices may be installed using a standalone pole with solar panel:

  • Blinky Beach
  • Middle Beach
  • Boat Harbour
  • Little Island

At each location, the device would be placed near existing signs or benches. Example dimensions (subject to final design):

  • Radio box: approx. 300 mm x 450 mm (similar to a defibrillator unit)
  • Pole: approx. 2.5 to 3 metres high
  • Solar panel: approx. 670mm x 770mm

Clear signage and instructions will be provided at each site. Visitor maps and walking track signage will also be updated to show the location of emergency radios and defibrillators.

We want your feedback

Would you support having emergency radio devices installed at the four proposed additional locations? Do you have other suggestions or concerns?

Please provide your input by completing the online feedback form by Thursday 12 February 2026.

This is part of the Board’s ongoing commitment to community safety and emergency preparedness.
