The Lord Howe Island Board is taking steps to better understand changes occurring along parts of the Island’s coastline.

Like many coastal communities, Lord Howe Island experiences ongoing natural coastal change. Recent observations indicate that some areas of the coastline may be experiencing more erosion and shoreline movement than has been seen in recent years.

So that future decisions are informed by the best available science, the Board has sought assistance from specialist coastal experts within the NSW Government. This work will improve understanding of the coastal processes affecting the Island and support a long-term approach to coastal management.

The initial focus is on how different parts of the coastal system interact, identifying any priority areas for monitoring, and considering potential risks to environmental, community and infrastructure assets.

No action is required from residents at this stage.

The Board will continue to monitor coastal conditions and will keep the community informed as further information becomes available.
