Lord Howe Now - Australia's Small Island Forum

The forum, which will be held from 30 April to 4 May 2012, will bring together small island communities from around Australia and internationally to discuss common challenges in terms of their economic, social and environmental futures.

Leading speakers have been organised for the event such as Zita Cobb from Fogo Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada and Jane Bates Mayor of Kangaroo Island. Formal registration for the event has opened and a number of registrations received from major islands including Christmas, Cocos, Norfolk and Flinders, also many smaller islands such as Bruny, Rottnest and Magnetic and the Chathams in New Zealand.

A Community Program which will include a series of social, cultural, sporting and educational events to bring the conference delegates and island community together has been developed and will be distributed in the next week. A few of the exciting community events include:

Community Market - A community market will be held to coincide with registration for the forum. All delegates will attend the school to register and have the opportunity to sample locally made produce or purchase locally handcrafted gifts and souvenirs and meet with island residents. The market will also offer visiting islands the opportunity to participate by showcasing unique arts and crafts from their home islands.

Island School Flickerfest - the LHI Central School has invited a number of island schools to produce a short film that highlights the individual uniqueness of each island school. The LHI Central School has invited the LHI community to share this experience with forum delegates.

The Kiribati Connection Heritage - will provide a unique opportunity for many Lord Howe Islanders to explore their roots and connection to Kiribati and the Gilbert Islands. Led by Maria Tiimon who will explore the cultural connection and relationship between Kiribati and Lord Howe Island. This workshop will provide a rare chance for many local islanders to visit their ancestry and gain a glimpse into their unique cultural identity.
