Long-liner prohibition proposed in new look Commonwealth Marine Reserve

The proposed marine reserve can be viewed at: http://www.environment.gov.au/coasts/mbp/temperate-east

The closing date for submissions will be 21 February 2012. Commonwealth staff are planning to visit the island to discuss the proposal at a public meeting on the Thursday 8th December 2011 from 3.30-6.30pm at the public hall.

While on the subject of long-lining, an increased presence of these craft just outside the current twelve nautical mile Commonwealth boundary over the past three months has been noted by many islanders. Currently all commercial long-liner vessel's have compulsory vessel management systems (VMS) fitted which gives a continuous signal that identifies their name, speed and heading. This information is sent to marine parks on Lord Howe Island in real time. While all activities in 2010 and 2011 have been legal, one incident involving a mainland commercial fishing vessel is currently under investigation.
