COVID-19 Update with regard to Travel 27 March 2020

Travelling to Lord Howe Island following the Public Health Order enacted 5am Sunday 22nd March 2020.

At this stage we have three categories of people named in the Order:

  1. Residents
  2. Non-Residents
  3. Essential Services (e.g required medical services)

The process for entry differs for each category and may continue to change but as of today the process is as follows:

Residents

Residents are permitted to leave and return under the Order, however, it is stressed that a strict 14-day quarantine will apply to anyone returning. It is very important that residents only travel to the mainland and return if it is critical that they do so.

Until Monday 30th March - Producing a photo ID is the method used for demonstrating to Qantas and Eastern Air Services that a resident can board the aircraft.

If you are travelling after the 30th March and are a resident of Lord Howe Island as at the 22nd March, the following process will apply.

If you leave the island with an intent to return or are currently on the mainland and hope to return to Lord Howe Island during the period of the Order, you will be required to fill in a Request for Return Access to Lord Howe Island form.

  1. You will receive a Request for Return Access to Lord Howe Island form on departure or you can email administration@lhib.nsw.gov.au for a copy
  2. Fill out and submit your form to administration@lhib.nsw.gov.au
  3. Your form will be reviewed by the CEO in consultation with the Board members if required
  4. An outcome will be emailed to you, and a copy will also be sent to Qantas or Eastern Air Services
  5. If approved, use this outcome email/letter as evidence of residency approval to board your flight to LHI

Non-Residents & Essential Services

  1. Email administration@lhib.nsw.gov.au for a copy of Request for Return Access to Lord Howe Island form
  2. Fill out and submit this form to administration@lhib.nsw.gov.au
  3. Your form will be reviewed by the CEO in consultation with Board members if required and sent to the Coordinator General for determination
  4. An outcome will be emailed to you, and a copy will also be sent to Qantas or Eastern Air Services
  5. If approved, use this outcome email/letter as evidence of residency approval to board your flight to LHI

The Coordinator General will be able to approve other non-residents arriving on the island but they will need to be able to demonstrate that their access is essential and how their isolation/quarantine arrangements will meet the Department of Health’s requirements. Urgent access with alternate isolation conditions may also be approved if the Coordinator General is satisfied that urgency and health safety objectives are met.

How to Quarantine on Lord Howe Island

Upon arrival to Lord Howe Island, you will enter into a mandatory 14-day quarantine period. There have been many questions with regard to the procedure for this period so we have put together a more localised guide to accompany the NSW self-isolation guidelines: Information Sheet - How to Qarantine on Lord Howe Island

If you have any questions with regard to the process, please call the LHIB on 6563 2066 for further information.

Yours Sincerely,

Peter Adams
