Chairperson of the Lord Howe Island Board.

The Board is a NSW statutory body, constituted under the Lord Howe Island Act 1953 (the Act), charged with the responsibility of administering the affairs of Lord Howe Island (the Island).

Membership of the Board is governed by section four of the Act which provides that the Board is to consist of seven members, four of whom are to be Islanders elected by the residents of the Island and three of whom are appointed by the Minister and are not to be Islanders.

Section 2 (1) of Schedule 1A of the Act provides that the Minister may appoint one of the members of the Board to be the Chairperson of the Board.

The Board Chair appointment is to Atticus Fleming AM who is the Deputy Secretary, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) where he leads a team of more than 2,000 staff managing 7.2 million hectares. Prior to joining the NSW Government, Atticus was the inaugural Chief Executive of the non-profit Australian Wildlife Conservancy, where he oversaw its growth to become the largest private owner of land for conservation in the world.  AWC pioneered a new non-profit business model for conservation, protecting some of the largest remaining populations of many of Australia’s most threatened species.

Prior to AWC, Atticus worked as an advisor to Australia’s longest serving Federal Environment Minister, the Hon Robert Hill, and as a constitutional lawyer (Federal Attorney-General’s Department) and a corporate lawyer and commercial lawyer (Mallesons).

In 2020, Atticus was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to the conservation of endangered wildlife.  In 2016, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Canberra, and was named by Australian Geographic as one of 30 people who have had the greatest influence on the conservation of Australia’s wildlife over the last 30 years.  In 2014, he was listed as one of four WA finalists in the 2014 Australian of the Year awards. Atticus has a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Commerce from UNSW.
