Covid-19 Update - Public Health Order No.3 31 July 2020

Confirmation has just been received that the Minister for Health has signed a new Public Health Order (No.3) for Lord Howe Island. The Order will effectively continue restrictions on travel to the island until 31 August.

Details will be further confirmed when the Order is able to be viewed. However, it is apparent that:

  • Persons wishing to access Lord Howe Island will continue to need approval and will be subject to quarantine in the same fashion as has applied up until now.

  • Those arriving before 31 August will need to complete their full 14 days quarantine effectively meaning that some people’s quarantine will continue until 14 September.

Both Qantas and Eastern Air Services have been waiting to hear news and will be managing how to deal with those who have booked flights who might not be now able to arrive on-island.

If you have any questions please contact Peter Adams, Justin Sauvage or the Lord Howe Island Police officer, Heath Roberts.

Covid-19 Public Health Order Decision 29 July 2020

As you will be aware, the LHI Public Health Order No. 2 has restricted access to the island and is due to expire on 3 August. Effectively, this meant that the island would be open to tourism from that date.

However, NSW Health have advised that they have concerns regarding community transmission of the virus on the mainland. It is not clear at this stage whether active cases in NSW will continue to increase or whether their measures will result in spread of the virus being brought back into better control.

Because of this, it is my understanding that it is very possible that a new Public Health Order will be enacted that would extend the restrictions beyond 3 August. This is a decision by the Minister for Health having taken advice from NSW Health. Therefore at this stage it is not possible to be certain of what that decision will be.

The Board have stressed with NSW Health, the urgency of making and communicating a decision as soon as possible because of its implications and challenges to those on island and to travellers booked to visit LHI.

Your frustrations and the challenges this uncertainty creates are understood and as soon as any decision or further information is known, I will communicate it urgently.

Notification of Helicopter Lance Spray Operation - July to August 2020

The Lord Howe Island Board is planning to undertake surveillance and spot spraying of weeds on cliff lines. This will see a continuation of the initial operation which commenced in 2015

The helicopter is fitted with a lance spray apparatus which enables targeted application of weeds on cliff lines.

Dense infestations of Ground Asparagus and Bitou Bush are now uncommon on the island and it is important to keep depleting infestations from cliff lines to prevent their spread. This project will complement efforts undertaken by ground crews.

Notification of Pesticide Use - 27/07/2020 to 30/08/2020

The Lord Howe Island Board is planning to undertake targeted spot spray of Bitou Bush, Ground Asparagus and African Box Thorn on sea cliffs by helicopter. Surveillance for weeds in remote areas will also be undertaken!

Proposed dates: Between the 27th July to 30th August (potentially early September) pending weather and seabird activity).  The program will be undertaken between 7:00 am and 4:00pm over a period of 5-7 days.
